The year of the Maya is here! The Maya was a very advanced culture, noted for its art and architecture, mathematical and astronomical systems and cuisine. They carved elaborate sculptures and reliefs, built sophisticated cities and temples, developed a highly accurate calendar, gazed at the stars in the observatories they constructed and utilized chocolate and corn in their food.

Since December 21, 2012 marks a special day for the Mayans – a day in which they believe the world would be reborn- Dreams Cancun Resort & Spa, Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa, Dreams Puerto Aventuras Resort & Spa and Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa are celebrating with a month of Mayan events beginning Thanksgiving, November 22, 2012 and ending Friday, December 21, 2012.

Dreams Cancun: Every Monday at Dreams Cancun, listen to our Mayan story teller and gaze at the stars with high powered telescopes. On Tuesday, watch the Mayan torch show followed by the Mayan Show where the performers are dressed in traditional Mayan garb. Ever Wednesday, enjoy Mayan and Spanish language lessons and face painting. On Thursday, the kids in the Explorer’s Club make their own Mayan calendar and hunt for treasure. Friday, learn some traditional Mayan dances and Saturday, join us for a movie. Cap off your week of Mayan events on Sunday with a Mayan sandcastle contest.

Dreams Tulum: Experience the magic of the Maya at Dreams Tulum, adjacent to the gorgeous Mayan ruins of Tulum, with an exclusive tour of the city’s ruins every Monday and explore nearby cenotes, natural freshwater pools that are abundant in the Riviera Maya, every Tuesday. On Wednesdays, take park in our stargazing night and Mayan show. Enjoy Mayan rituals like the temazcal (a Mayan sauna) on Friday, compete in the sandcastle competition on Saturday and party at the Sunday beach party!

Dreams Riviera Cancun: At Dreams Riviera Cancun, discover the Mayan cuisine every Monday while you watch traditional Mayan dishes being made. On Tuesday, build a traditional Mayan hut and furniture. Every Wednesday, take part in a Mayan ceremony where a Mayan chaman conducts a tirual that will leave you filled with positive energy. Learn basic Mayan words and how to write them on Thursdays. Fridays, stargaze and view the vast solar system with our high tech telescopes. Saturday, play a Mayan ball game in the pool and finish off your week on Sunday with a Mayan show.

Dreams Puerto Aventuras: At Dreams Puerto Aventuras, take part in the special activities that include stargazing, Mayan shows, learning the Mayan number system and language, creating Mayan crafts, cooking Mayan dishes in a class. Kids get in on the fun as well creating Mayan costumes!

The season of snorkeling with whale sharks is here and we are excited to share a recent first-hand experience with you! Guests of Dreams Cancun Resort and Spa just have a short walk to the beach to Solo Buceo dive center located on the property. After an hour boat ride offshore where the gentle giants hang out snorkelers dive in and swim with the whale sharks! This is a once in a lifetime experience that you don’t want to miss.

Read about how Gringation’s blogger Laura Winfree and her husband Jorge enjoyed the excursion with Nadia, Dreams Cancun’s e-concierge:

”When Jorge, my friend Nadia and I decided to swim with whale sharks this weekend, I was so excited but mostly nervous! I’d never snorkeled in more than 10 feet of water before, much less in the middle of the ocean with no land in sight. Or swimming alongside a 30-foot fish.

At 7 am Sunday morning, we made our way to the Solo Buceo dive center located at the beautiful Dreams Cancun Resort and Spa in the Hotel Zone. Our early-morning boat ride was much bumpier than I’d anticipated, and I realized it was my first time being so far away from shore! It was a scary but fascinating feeling.”

Check out the photos below taken by Laura and read more about their day on her blog post.

Gringation’s Whale Shark Tour Tips:

  1. Put on sunscreen before you leave the house, or bring bio sunscreen. I was too lazy to put sunscreen on before leaving the house, and our guide told us that once you’re on the boat, it’s bio sunscreen only. And today I’m paying the price. So much sunburn. Ow.
  2. Bring an underwater camera. In a way I was glad I didn’t have one because it was one less thing to worry about while I was swimming, but trust me, you’ll want those underwater photos.
  3. The boat ride is bumpy and uncomfortable (but worth it), so I wouldn’t recommend this tour unless you’re in decent physical condition.
  4. Sunglasses!
  5. Dramamine!

For additional information about snorkeling with whale sharks please contact our e-concierge, Nadia at Econcierge.drecu@dreamsresorts.com. Since she has experienced snorkeling with whale sharks she can share even more tips with you!

Swimmers from around the world are getting ready to make a splash in the Caribbean Sea just off-shore of Dreams Cancun Resort & Spa. Tomorrow, June 23rd is “Por la Libre 2012”, The 7th International Marathon of Open Water Swimming and we are proud to be the host resort for this prestigious sporting event. Athletes will challenge themselves with a long distance swim from Cancun to Isla Mujures.

This open water race is one of the World’s Top 100 Open Water Swims because of its pristine setting in the Caribbean Sea. It is also the only event where athletes can swim above the unique Cancun Underwater Museum (MUSA). There are two distances for swimmers to choice from,  3K (1.86 miles) or the more challenging 10k (6.2 miles) course. Both race courses are in crystal-clear tropical waters but it can still be very  challenging for even elite swimmers due to occasional rough tides.  The race starts in Cancun and finishes in  Isla Mujures.

If you are visiting this weekend cheer on the athletes in this exciting race! Take a look photos from last year’s event.

Dreams Cancun Resort & Spa has implemented many environmentally friendly programs. Leave a Green Print is the name of the resort’s campaign to encourage guests to join the staff in their efforts to conserve energy and be environmentally conscious.

Small steps make a big impact! From using room key cards made of 100% recycled plastic to monitoring water consumption, the resort is leaving a green print in the Caribbean.  Dreams Cancun promotes projects that contribute to environmental improvements.

Room Key Made of 100% Recycled Plastic

They have kept track of their efforts and last year alone they recycled over 3,450 lbs of glass.  The resort has also joined World Wildlife Fund by taking part in Earth Hour. This is a period of time where the lights are switched off for an hour in specific areas of the resort.

Guests will see reminders of the program throughout the resort.  Various recycling bins can be found throughout the resort as well as friendly reminders in guest rooms reminding guests to minimize the number of towels and linens being used to conserve water.

The next time you visit Dreams Cancun please keep all of this in mind so that generations to come will be able to appreciate the beauty of the Yucatan Peninsula.
