“Hola”…”Corona Tequila?,” and “It is a pleasure…” are three wonderful phrases you will hear throughout the day at Dreams Cancun.
The surroundings at Dreams are breathtaking. The views serve as picture perfect postcards, dolphins dive up and in and out of the dolphin pool/lagoon area, three restaurants sit alongside the ocean and outdoor bars with swings are great for kids and adults.
The food in the World Cafe (buffet style) is simply delicious. Breakfast in particular is over the top. Dry off completely and wear a nice cover-up going into all the restaurants. If you are not completely dry, first stop and get a towel to place on the chair under you; this will save you a trip to go get one. Eat rib-eye tacos at the Seaside grill, Seafood Trilogy at the Oceana, and Tuna Tempura at the Japanese restaurant. Try a blue Lagoon at the beach and let your kids have the specialty non-alcoholic drinks.
As far as the kids club activities, the six children that travelled with us ages 7 to 10, enjoyed beach castle building and pool activities. Obviously, it is rather warm in Mexico; therefore, the kids enjoyed activities involving water.
The Fire and Water show was spectacular as was the Mexican themed night and show.
The room accommodations are pleasant (pastels with sheer whites adorned w/seashells over the bed). The beds were so comfortable and they delivered 3 roll-aways to our rooms so we could manage the kids, grandmother and adults. Our 3 rooms had king beds and there was plenty of room for the rollaways. We couldn’t get over the ocean view from our rooms 3236, 3237, & 3238. We actually chose our three rooms in the Pyramid building as opposed to three rooms in the Tower. The Tower is actually an upgrade, but we did not view it as such and chose our rooms for the tranquility that the room and view offered.
Sapphire blue skies are overhead and Turquoise blue waves crash alongside rocks. The palm trees appeared as if they have been strategically planted and swayed gently outside our balcony. I will tell you that nighttime on the deck was quite romantic and private. Considering we had children in our room, this was a great escape at night. 🙂 Additionally, there are iguanas on the property; the kids really enjoyed seeing them. Our location was very close to the Ocean beach. Here we found shark teeth and beautiful shells. The hotel recommends that you leave the shells; however, with 6 children, we did take a few shells home. Apologies to Mexico for this, but we could not resist. There will be dampness in your room, but to diminish the moisture, avoid leaving the balcony and front door open especially at the same time. Also, keeping the air conditioning below 60 might help as well.
My one and only negative is due to the behavior of some of the guests not the resort itself. Guests go down to the pool area as early as 6:00 am to reserve a pool loungers, and by 7:00 am most of the seats are occupied/reserved with towels, yet there is no one swimming in the pool. In order to rectify this, Dreams needs to direct that the employees be diligent about removing towels from unoccupied/abandoned loungers that are left for hours at a time. Had the employees been directed to do so, they would have, as they would say, with pleasure. The employees were extremely polite.
There is a best kept secret pool and lounge in front of the wedding area…I say this with hesitation, for I do not wish to see it crowded next time I go back! It was our private pool for most of the 8 day vacation. Hector is a great bartender at the Tower bar.
Diego is the friendliest and most helpful guy ever. He is the quintessential example of a cool laid back guy. He made our family feel particularly welcome, shared tips with us, and simply was a wonderful part of our day to day on the sea side. He is in the water sports shack where you can secure an excursion. We used the floating blue mats everyday to lounge in the sea, we snorkeled right alongside the coast and saw many fish, and enjoyed the kayaking (all of which are free).
Although Dreams is an all-inclusive and tips are not necessary, I would advise that you tip the maid service daily and those that give you excellent service. We tipped often for we found that it just felt right to give them a few dollars after dinner service and/or a night out at the bar. The employees work 12 hour shifts, work hard, and get paid very little according to American standards.
As far as the character and honesty of the Dreams employees, I can attest that I left my camera at the pool and one of the employees down by the Ocean beach (Maura) carefully tucked it away for me in his hut. He saw that I was looking for something by the pool and had me follow him, so that he could perhaps help me find what I was looking for by the pool. My entire vacation pictures were in my camera. Actually, since I hardly ever develop my pictures, I had over a year’s worth of photos on the card. I also noticed that he had also recovered sun screen left by the pool. My daughter left her flip flops at the outdoor Mexican dinner buffet, and rest assured they were placed with the hostess.
I have never written a review prior to writing this review. I am a mother of two and a teacher in Pennsylvania; we took my mother to Dreams for her 80th birthday which we celebrated on our last night 7/18/10 at the Oceana with cake and the traditional singing of Happy Birthday. All of the waiters gave her a hug and made her feel so happy that she cried. We travelled with our friends who have 4 kids as well. My son swam with the dolphins, and I would highly recommend a photo shoot for your family. The session is free and you simply pay per picture ($15 US).
