It’s hard to believe that January is only a few weeks away signaling the beginning of a very exciting time of year for us–whale watching season! We can’t wait to see the graceful return of Grey whales to their winter home just off the Pacific Coast of Mexico. This amazing spectacle takes place at both Dreams Los Cabos Resort & Spa and Dreams Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa, where Grey whales flock to the Magdelena Bay and the Banderas Bay.
The whales return to the warm waters off the coast of Mexico from their summer home in the chilly Bering Sea to give birth to their calves. Grey whales take care of their young in the safe haven of the bay, allowing them to grow to over 19 feet long and 3,000 pounds. Before leaving their safe summer home the Grey whale calves must be ready to defend themselves from predators such as sharks or orcas on their way back to the Bering Sea.
Between January and March, you can enjoy the spectacular views of the whales frolicking playfully with their pods. Seeing the whales breach, or jump completely out of the water, is an awe-inspiring treat! Whales are also known for ‘spyhopping’, or pushing themselves out of the water to see their surroundings, putting them eye-to-eye with you!
If you want to take part in this exciting adventure during your stay with us, simply stop by our activities desk upon arrival!
Just wondering how long the whales are around Puerto Vallarta? We are planning on visiting The end of Feb.
Thanks!
Ususally the whales are present between January and March!
